Lawrence Dinkelspiel Steefel was born in Rochester, New York on June 25, 1894. He earned his B.A. in 1916, M.A. in 1917 and Ph.D. in 1923 from Harvard University. Dr. Steefel joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in 1923 at the rank of instructor of history. He was promoted through the ranks, retiring in 1959 as professor emeritus. Courses in history were first taught at the University of Minnesota in 1869 by the university's first president, William Watts Folwell. The first faculty in history was appointed in 1874, and in 1885 the department of history was established with Harry P. Judson named as chair.
